This page contains information related to the unfinished SRTM data formerly available from the USGS and now available from NASA. That site is just over 27 GB. Every image on this page links to a larger version.
The finished SRTM data are now available on the USGS Seamless Data Distribution System. When they become available for ftp, I will collect them and update this page.
This site is a companion to my NED Information site.
All these images were created using Radio Mobile. I have included download links for the original Radio Mobile format map and picture files used to create them. The images displayed on this page are one fourth the size of the original bmp versions. I scaled them and saved them as jpg with The GIMP.
The author of Radio Mobile has a tool available to edit SRTM .hgt files and fill in voids with data from DTED files. It is available on his terrain data sources page along with his DEM to SRTM converter.
This first group of maps show the coverage of the currently available SRTM datasets. I have included the DTED coverage for comparison. The DTED data came from the KF4LGV / VDEN site. That site also has the SRTM data available.

The N47W087 cell is missing in both the SRTM-1 and SRTM-3 datasets. This cell is completely over Lake Superior so no actual land area is missing. It is included in the DTED-0 and DTED-1 datasets.
The N44W076 cell in SRTM-1 was not properly cropped along the United States / Canada border and is missing data in New York that should be there and includes a small part of Ontario that is probably not supposed to be there.
The following SRTM-1 cells are provided as .bin files and will not work as is. I renamed them and used a binary editor (bvi) to remove all the extra stuff from the beginning and end of the files that was put there by Adobe PhotoShop 7.0 on a Mac (that text was part of what I had to remove). These zip files contain the repaired files. All of them work as exact replacements for the originals and were used in some of the above maps.
These cells did not show up in the unfinished SRTM on the USGS Seamless Data Distribution System. This leads me to believe no one at the USGS or NASA is aware of the problems with their official copies of these cells.
This SRTM-30 cell was provided with a .hgt extension inside the zip file. I renamed it and made a new zip file for it.
After the above cells are fixed on the USGS site, I will update this and remove my versions of them.
